Popis: Do people support spending for pandemic preparedness? Prior research suggests that voters prefer spending on disaster response relative to disaster preparedness, and this has been interpreted as voters being myopic given the significant benefits of disaster preparedness spending. For instance, previous research estimates that for every dollar spent on preparedness, between $4 and $14 is saved in response spending. Similarly, public health funding has considerable benefits in preparing communities for threats to public health. Yet, prior research finds that voters reward post-disaster relief spending, which raises questions about the mechanisms driving these results. In particular, it is possible that differences in responses to preparedness and relief spending are driven by different amounts of easily available information to voters regarding each type of spending rather than the nature of the policies themselves. In this experimental study we examine how information about COVID-19 preparations affect support for future spending on preparation vs. response.
