The purpose of this chapter is to describe developmentally appropriate techniques based on the creative arts that can be used to teach young people the basic REBT concepts: self-acceptance, emotions, beliefs and behaviors, changing beliefs and behaviors, and the ABC model. Some of the techniques will be described through short case studies to more clearly illustrate how the basic principles of the theory can be adapted for younger populations. Each section will include techniques for children (ages 6–11) and adolescents (ages 12–18). Many of the activities described were originally developed in my clinical work with young clients, so they have been clinically tested. The chapter will conclude with a section on age-appropriate homework assignments. |
