The concept of control the state of a thermoresponsive polymer through magnetocaloric effect was proved using in situ experiments in a magnetic field. Composites consisting of a PNIPAM polymer coated with the magnetocaloric Gd were fabricated and studied. It was shown that the phase transition at ~32 °C from the swollen hydrated to the shrunken dehydrated state and vice versa could be induced by switching on (off) a magnetic field due to the heating (cooling) of Gd substrate in results of the magnetocaloric effect. Demonstrated smart effect may be of interest in the development of new smart materials for biomedical applications. |
