This chapter offers some suggestions as to why developmental psychologists may have neglected cross-cultural studies of individuality; and how one may conceptualize the development of individual differences as an interaction between the characteristics of the individual and of his society. It suggests steps to apply the suggested conceptual model to the scientific study of individual development in different cultures. Theories and models in differential psychology and psychogenetics dealing with the sources of individual differences are especially relevant even though they are restricted in scope. The obstacle to cross-cultural research in the development of individual differences seems to be conceptual. Some of the concepts derived from national character research are also relevant to cross-cultural studies of individual development. The interaction between culturally specific developmental tasks and individual peculiarities may best be conceptualized in terms of a 'challenge and response' model of individual differences. |
