Popis: Although largely overlooked by environmental justice (EJ) scholars, trade unions are important environmental justice actors with a long history of leading and participating in EJ struggles in the workplace, among local communities and globally. This chapter examines trade unions’ role and capacity as an EJ actor and argues that unions have a complex relationship to environmental justice concerns. Their membership base and representation among workers who are involved in transforming the material world in ways which may have harmful environmental impacts means unions must be considered differently than other EJ actors. Drawing upon illustrative case study examples, the chapter demonstrates how unions have led environmental justice campaigns in the workplace, shaped community EJ campaigns and continue to influence global environmental justice initiatives.
