Popis: The use of the high-temperature nitrous oxide-acetylene flame both in atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy can be hazardous. In particular, the high burning velocity of this gas mixture can cause serious flashback when supported on the conventional slot-type burner. For safe operation of the N2O-C2H2 flame on a slot burner, it is necessary to maintain a high total gas issuing velocity. Commonly, burner start-up procedures require initially lighting a less flashbackprone mixture—and then switching over to nitrous oxide. Often differential flow controllers are employed so that the change over can be accomplished smoothly. However, in conventional burners, if the proper flow rates are not maintained during this change over and during subsequent operation, a rather violent flashback can occur.
