Parents and educators sometimes feel the need to censor children’s books from school libraries - if the book in question contains material they feel is unsuitable for their children to read. Objectionable material can include (but is not limited) to graphic violence, language, LGBTQIA themes, drug use and sexual content. By asking the librarians to remove these books from the shelves, parents exert control over the library collection. Librarians sometimes feel the need to censor themselves in order to avoid being challenged by concerned parents. This paper will review research to-date related to censorship of children’s books in school libraries.
