On the 14th September 2020 Compass Archaeology undertook a Watching Brief at Sebastian Court, Meadow Road, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham IG11 9PE. The work was commissioned by Jerram Falkus in response to conditions attached to an approved planning condition (ref: 19/00624/FUL) associated with the redevelopment of the site. The work comprised the recording of two trenches situated towards the northern end of the present site, between two residential blocks currently under construction. Trench 1 recorded a series of modern made ground deposits, the uppermost parts of which were disturbed by the present groundworks. A small quantity of 20th century pottery was recovered from the trench base at 2.0m below ground level (c2.3-2.4mOD). Trench 2 recorded a shallower sequence of 20th century made ground, overlying natural brickearth clay and Taplow Gravels, encountered at a depth of 1.2mbgl (3.2moD) and 1.8mbgl (2.6mOD) respectively, and taken to continue below the level of excavation at 2.0m (c2.4mOD). No features of archaeological significance were recorded. A significant quantity of complete glass vessels has been recovered from across the site. The assemblage comprises predominantly pharmaceutical and food vessels of early-20th century, several of which were manufactured in London. The vessels are taken to represent a modern bottle dump, or possibly someone's private collection. |
