Stress and strain corrosion of glass fibre-polyester resin materials is characterised by flat fracture surfaces with only small amounts of fibre pull-out. The times to failure and fracture surfaces of hoop wound and ±55° helically wound pipe sections tested in diametrical compression are compared with the results of stress corrosion on ±55° wound tubes tested under biaxial loading conditions. All the tests were carried out in water or hydrochloric acid. The failure times are strongly dependent on the stresses parallel to the fibres. Transverse cracking, parallel to the fibres, is also important since it affects the flow of acid to the fibres and produces local regions of stress concentration. The results are compared with fracture surface studies on GRP tanks which have failed in service. |
