Carboxylic acids are prototypical building units for the creation of two-dimensional supramolecular architectures on surfaces. The formation of double (dihapto) hydrogen bonds is a common binding geometry of COOH functional groups. On surfaces, however, carboxylates and coordination bonds could also be formed due to the lowering of the activation barrier toward deprotonation of the carboxylic groups. This capacity of forming metal–ligand coordination bonds paved the road toward the creation of a wide variety of surface-confined metal–organic networks. This article is focused on the deprotonation phenomenon in connection with the generation of these types of supramolecular networks under ultra high vacuum conditions. |
