Popis: | Brain abscess, one of the intracranial complications of ear disease, is a life-threatening disease. This paper describes cerebellar abscess in a patient who had been treated with left radical tympanomastoidectomy 35 years earlier. The patient was a 50-year-old female who had occasional left aural discharge since middle ear surgery. She experienced severe headache in the left temporal region and aural discharge in June 1992. After 25 days, she had a sudden attacked of vertigo, nausea, vomiting, ataxia and somnolence. CT scan and MRI examinations revealed a relatively well-encapsulated abscess with three small satellite abscess in the left cerebellar hemisphere. Emergency resection was performed by neurosurgeons. Two early clinical symptoms which suggest the presence of brain abscess secondary to ear disease can be pointed out. One is prolonged headache in the temporal and/or occipital regions, and the other is prolonged fever without white blood cell elevation. |
