A study of fatigue behaviour in an Fe-28Al-3Cr-Ce (at.%) based alloy was carried out on compact tension (CT) specimens 5 mm in thickness. The specimens were loaded in tension at 20, 300 and 500 °C with 10 Hz frequency and R in the range from 0.05 to 0.1. The fatigue crack growth rate was measured by the potential method. The number of cycles to failure decreases rapidly with temperature. The fatigue crack propagation rate at RT and elevated temperatures is different. The slope of v (Δ K ) curves is much steeper at RT, while it remains almost the same at 300 and 500 °C. The fatigue crack growth rate at 500 °C is nearly two orders higher than at 300 °C. Fractographic analysis showed that at room temperature (RT) fatigue crack growth is controlled by several mechanisms. The main failure mechanism is transgranular cleavage, crack growth by the brittle or ductile striation mechanism is localized only in several areas along the crack front. |
