The diffusion and sedimentation of polyamide hydrazide solutions

Popis: The rapid sedimentation, progressive diffusion and intrinsic viscosity of 17 polyamide hydrazide (PAH) samples have been measured in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and dimethylacetamide (DMA). The possibility is shown of calculating mol. wt. from the diffusion and viscometric data by using the parameter A0=3·78×10−10 erg/°C. This yielded [ν]=5·6×10−5M1·58 and D=6·3×10−4M−0.85 which link the intrinsic viscosities and diffusion coefficients with the molecular weights MDν. The ratio of the indices in these equations, a/b=1·86, is typical of macromolecules with a stretched conformation; this confirms the earlier conclusion of the PAH molecules having a high rigidity equilibrium. A very small resolving capacity of the rapid sedimentation method, when applied to similar rigid chain polymers, is demonstrated.
