Popis: Between October 2019 and March 2020 Compass Archaeology undertook an archaeological watching brief on a series of security upgrades completed at Leadenhall Market. The work monitored six trial pits associated with the works, and the subsequent resurfacing groundworks. The work exposed the existing post-medieval basements below the market and a shallow sequence of modern backfilling events. A single fragment of moulded stone was recovered, dated to the 20th century and is believed to be a fragment of the earlier incarnation of the Lloyd's Building, which occupied the site until 1978. The maximum depth reached was 1.2m (16.44mOD) and natural geology was not observed. Trial pits exposed a series of modern and post-medieval backfills surrounding existing services. This dumping overlay the existing basements below the market, resulting in a shallow stratigraphic sequence. On Leadenhall Place a homogenous deposit of demolition material was observed, taken to be from the former Lloyd's Building which occupied the site between 1928 and 1978. A single fragment of moulded stone was recovered from the material. Many of the areas observed were heavily truncated and disturbed by modern service works. No further features of archaeological interest were observed.
