Background Telerehabilitation is an emerging field that provides delivery of rehabilitation services to patients via remote information and communication technologies. Several reviews have demonstrated the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of telerehabilitation in improving post-surgical and stroke patients’ physical outcomes, while affording greater patient convenience. Currently, there are no reviews which have summarised results from qualitative studies about patient experiences and challenges encountered with telerehabilitation. Hence, this review aims to synthesise data from qualitative studies about elderly patients’ experiences with telerehabilitation. Methods This protocol is developed based on the recommendations of the Enhancing transparency in reporting the synthesis of qualitative research (ENTREQ) statement. Qualitative studies which evaluated telerehabilitation in the elderly (≥60 years of age) will be included. The literature search will be conducted in Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials, Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL EBSCOhost and Scopus, from their inception until March 2023. Two independent researchers will screen the identified citations and extract data using a standardized data extraction form. The quality of the included studies will be assessed using the Joanna Briggs checklist for qualitative research appraisal tool and results from included articles will be qualitatively synthesised using the framework synthesis approach. Discussion This systematic review will provide an overview of experiences and challenges of elderly patients with telerehabilitation. Results from this review will aid the development of instruments to assess patient reported outcome measures for telerehabilitation and highlight to policymakers important patient related considerations in designing or improving telerehabilitation services.
