During the excavation of four rooms for an experiment demonstrating the disposal of radioactive wastes in salt mines, a number of unique rock deformation measurements were made. Since the new rooms were higher stratigraphically than the surrounding older workings, it was possible to observe deformations as the working face passed directly over instrumented boreholes. The results dramatically illustrate the presence of an abutment pressure in the floor travelling along with the face. The results of a comparative test of three different types of borehole gauge showed a certain degree of correspondence qualitatively but no quantitative conclusion could be drawn from any of the instruments used. |
