1. 1. A comparative study was made of triglyceride synthesis by the mammary tissue of goat and sow. In goat mammary tissue, glycerol-3-phosphate was a more effective acceptor of fatty acids than I -monoglycerides. The use of glyceryl ethers as model compounds of monoglycerides showed that 2-glyceryl ethers were more effective than I-glyceryl ethers. In sow mammary tissue, I-monoglycerides were as effective as glycerol3-phosphate in triglyceride synthesis. 2. 2. Both the glycerol-3-phosphate and monoglyceride pathways were located in the microsomal particles of pig and sow mammary tissue. 3. 3. The fatty acid specificity of the glycerol-3-phosphate pathway was studied in goat mammary tissue homogenate and microsomal particles. Octanoic and decanoic gave negligible triglyceride synthesis with microsomal particles. Lauric, myristic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids were inhibitory at concentrations above the optimum, but octanoic, decanoic, palmitic, and stearic did not show this effect. 4. 4. The enzymes I-monoglyceride lipase and glycerokinase were detected in both species in the particle-free supernatant. |
