The concept of national security has long been primarily about protection of the nation-state at all costs, even over the needs or security of the individual. This chapter describes the dimensions of human security and highlights climate change as an exemplar of environmental insecurity. The United Nations 2019 Emissions Gap Report articulates well the dire state of the climate emergency, as well as the implications for economic and societal development, a classic yet unprecedented human security imperative, and climate change. Human security includes political, economic, health, gender, community and environmental security dimensions and various overlapping threats to these aspects abound across the globe. The United Nations Commission on Human Security defines human security as a means of protecting fundamental freedoms that constitute the essence of life. |
