In emulsion polymerization free radicals generated in the continuous medium enter the monomer/polymer particles at a rate which is governed by either collision or diffusion dynamics. Previously various theories have assumed one or the other model. Two series of experiments are described to test which theory applies. One series involves seeded emulsion polymerization, while the other starts with a perfectly homogenoeus solution. The rate of radical “capture” by the monomer/polymer particles in both series is proportional to the product of particle number and radius, in support of a diffusion-controlled process. The electrostatic interaction between like charged radicals and particles is thought to be negligible, but experimental proof is required. |
