This study investigates how different dimensions of political conflict frames affect voters’ feelings and trust toward the source and the target of the conflict frame, general political cynicism, and political participation. Here, we are primarily interested in the (de)legitimizing impact and democratic consequences of conflict frames in a multiparty context. We consider the impact of four dimensions present in the online communication of political parties: 1) the use of incivility; 2) whether the conflict frame contains a personal attack; 3) whether the conflict is about distinct understandings of what is morally or scientifically acceptable (deep vs. superficial); 4) and whether it concerns normative or factual issues. |
