Popis: French and Italian differ in whether verbs can be overtly marked with reflexive morphology under the causative verb 'faire/fare'; while French allows 'faire se Verb' constructions, Italian does not allow 'fare si Verb'. In addition, individual verbs differ in whether their intransitive form obligatorily, optionally, or never occurs with reflexive morphology. Focusing on alternating verbs, this study investigates the extent to which French and Italian sentences with 'faire/fare' lead to an ambiguity between the intransitive or transitive meanings of the embedded verb, and whether the ambiguity arises more with some verb classes than others. We employ a truth value judgment task, in which participants judged the availability of an intransitive or transitive construal of the embedded verb, with a follow-up sliding scale in the case of ambiguity (i.e. when both construals were available).
