Popis: | Although Americans value the principles of equality and fairness, our history shows that we have not always extended these rights and concerns to all groups of people. Since the implementation of civil rights initiatives in the middle of this century, social and economic progress has been made by traditionally disadvantaged groups, and now federal policymakers are considering whether policies designed to eliminate discriminatory practices and achieve equality are still needed. In this issue, we bring together a collection of articles that has relevance for public policy on affirmative action. This introductory article summarizes the research in this issue, and presents broad themes relevant to discussions of affirmative action. At the heart of a reconsideration of federal policy on affirmative action is the issue of fairness, and evaluations of fairness at both the macro, societal level and micro, individual level are considered. |
