Nitrate assimilation has been shown to be regulated in many cases by changes in the activity of nitrate reductase. This can occur by genetic induction and repression or viadirect activity changes, i. e., by activation and inactivation of the enzyme (reviews of Beevers and Hageman, 1980; Losada and Guerrero, 1979; Vennesland and Guerrero, 1979). Nitrate reductase synthesis is mainly induced by nitrate and light and repressed by ammonia and amino acids. Compared with nitrate reduction, nitrate uptake as a process subject to regulation has been little investigated. |
