Historically, a neutral posture is recommended for prolonged periods of sitting to avoid pain and reduce risk of injury. However, while evidence exists that those who experience low back pain may find certain postures provocative, there is less evidence to support the idea that “poor” postures are primary pain generators (Slater D, Korakakis V, O’Sullivan P, Nolan D, O’Sullivan K, J Orthop Sports Phys Ther. 49:562–564, 2019). There is a broad spectrum of normal, non-pathological anatomical variation in the spine, and existing spinal curvatures impact postural adaptations. Furthermore, relaxed, comfortable postures will vary between individuals. |
