The production of β-glucanase by Bacillus subtilis VTT 160 was studied. Using a medium containing barley and distiller's grain the concentration of available sugars approached zero at the end of the phase of active production of β-glucanase. For this reason starch feeding was employed, commencing at this stage of the cultivation. Markedly increased yields of β-glucanase were obtained when the starch feed was commenced at the correct time. |
