Popis: Mortality resulting from sepsis and multiple organ failure (MOF) is a common problem on the intensive care unit (ICU). It is estimated that 400000 to 500000 patients each year in both USA and Europe will develop sepsis. In the UK some 50% of patients with sepsis on the ICU die, most often as a result of MOF. The precise pathogenesis underlying multiple organ dysfunction and failure is as yet unknown. It has, however, been appreciated for some time that tissue dysoxia occurs in sepsis, where although oxygen delivery to tissues may be higher than normal, oxygen uptake is compromised.
