Advancements in oncologic therapies have led to increasing numbers of long-term cancer survivors and thus more patients for whom radiation therapy is indicated as part of their comprehensive treatment plan. Here we provide an overview of the biologic mechanisms underlying radiation therapy, before examining the various radiotherapy modalities currently available in clinical practice, including modern innovations such as stereotactic ablative techniques, advanced image guidance, and proton beam therapy. We also discuss an exciting, relatively novel indication for radiation therapy that holds promise for improving patient outcomes and further expanding the field of radiotherapy: local consolidation in the definitive management of oligometastatic disease. |
