67This chapter describes my work after the first public dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. At first I “lost” my purpose in corporate banking, but then I rediscovered it in sustainable investing, social entrepreneurship, and consulting. These new activities were inspired by a series of events. First, I returned to China as a social entrepreneur to help the Tibetan people in sustainable development. Second, after meeting the American businessman Anders Ferguson, we were able to continue the “Compassion or Competition” dialogue on a global scale through conferences in New York and elsewhere, and in the process a global network, Spirit in Business, was established. This network exposed me to the inspiring world of the modern science of the mind and social innovation. Third, the government of Bhutan, a secluded Buddhist Kingdom in the Himalayas, invited me to work with them in operationalizing their unique development model of gross national happiness. In the ensuing years (1999–2004), as I traveled the world in a new identity, I had a genuine sense of living my purpose, a phase characterized by exploration and discovery. But it was also a somewhat chaotic time, leading to new levels of confusion. |
