On the evening of June 6, 1944, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, scribbled a hastily written note in pencil and placed it in his uniform pocket. The content of that note contained Eisenhower’s sole acceptance of responsibility for the failure of D-Day. In sharp contrast to his carefully crafted orders to launch Operation Overlord, the D-Day assault on German forces in France, Eisenhower’s penciled note shows just how fantastically risky the historic invasion really was. Eisenhower’s note read, “My decision to attack at this time and place was based upon the best information available. The troops, the air and the navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt, it is mine alone.” |
