Popis: Two studies were conducted to evaluate the potential of a cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor, 2(p-biphenyl) propionic acid (BPPA), for use as an agent for synchronizing oestrus and mating. The first study determined that BPPA given systematically to rats from Day 6 through Day 18 or 20 of pseudopregnancy, and then withdrawn, synchronized the length of pseudopregnancy and the time of mating within day period over both day periods. Since an overall synchronization in mating was also achieved for two durations of pseudopregnancy that differed by as much as 2 days, it is evident that BPPA was capable of synchronizing the post-treatment oestrous periods of animals coming into pretreatment oestrus over at least a 3-day period. The BPPA treatment had little effect on litter size measurements of the ensuing pregnancy, except to reduce the average number of placental scars in the animals in one day period, and increase the average number of placental scars and average number of pups in the animals in the other day period. The second study showed that 500 mg BPPA given systematically twice daily to cyclic sheep would prolong luteal life span in this species, as judged by morphological criterion.
