Popis: | Geographic comparisons of 25 skull and four external characters of the Japanese hare ( Lepus brachyurus ) revealed that hares from Nishinoshima and Dogo of the Oki Islands and hares from Shimane Prefecture on mainland Honshu are distinct. The Oki Islands hares are larger in overall body size, but have shorter ears and hind feet than mainland hares; Oki Islands hares also are smaller in overall size of skull, but the postorbital width and the length of frontal bone are larger. Skull shape is different between Nishinoshima and Dogo, and length of head and body and length of ear are smaller in Nishinoshima than in Dogo. Interisland variation likely was caused by random changes due to genetic drift, bottleneck effects, or founder effects. |
