Popis: | At the beginning of the sixth lunar month of the fifth year of the Tianqi reign, six martyrs of the Donglin party languished in prison, where they were to undergo a whole range of tortures at the hands of their jailer Xu Xianchun, which culminated in their execution. The Six Martyrs were: Zuo Guangdou (1575–1625); Yang Lian (1571–1625); Wei Dazhong (1575–1625); Zhou Chaorui; Yuan Huazhang, jinshi of 1607; and Gu Dazhang (1576–1625). What purports to be an account of their incarceration and suffering appears as a supplement to the Bixuelu, a work compiled by Huang Yu early in the Chongzhen reign, which also embodies various writings by the Martyrs themselves, compiled during their stay in prison. This work within a work has for its title Tianren hezheng jishi, “A true record of the convergence of the celestial and the human,” so given because the author's attention has been drawn to the dramatic events he is to describe by a series of astrological portents.
