In the human body the vascular network links organs, which, besides transporting oxygen and nutrients, is a vital communicationhighway for metabolic signaling between tissues. Unraveling thecomplexity of interorgan and intertissue cross talk in vivo is acomplex and challenging task. Intelligent in vitro models able torecapitulate the physiological interactions between tissues in thebody connected by the bloodstreamhave enormous potential as theyenable detailed studies on specific two-way or higher-order organ-organ and tissue interactions. An integrated systemic view can thusbe constructed piecewise. The aim of this paper is to show howallometry can be used to set up physiologically relevant connectedculture models of biotransformation, distribution, adsorption andgas exchange in the Quasi-Vivo R© system. |
