The possibility of the use of ion implantation for reduction of friction coefficient of alumina has been studied. Two different approaches were used: formation of thin soft layer via noble gas irradiation and doping of surface layer via implantation of lubricant (In). The results point to significant softening and high plasticity of Al 2 O 3 after irradiation with noble gas atoms. In all studied cases the friction coefficient decrease was observed; the effects of In implantation causing the formation of indium nanoprecipitates on alumina surface seem to be the most promising. |
