This thesis examines the effects of exile on the life and music of Sergei Rachmaninoff and how those effects might inform the way Rachmaninoff and composers like him are incorporated into the historical narrative of twentieth-century music. The first chapter concerns Rachmaninoff's life, particularly his experience in exile, but also his musical influences and experiences in pre-Revolutionary Russia. The second chapter is a case study of Rachmaninoff's final work, the Symphonic Dances, Opus 45, a detailed analysis of which aims to show how the composer's musical style synthesized his pre-exile musical influences and his contemporary musical context. |
