Popis: In this paper the author studies stylistic characteristics of poetic language of fiction trying to determine particularities that make it different from the standard use of the language. The characteristics of poetic language reflected in the field of lexis, the use of stylistic figures and its specific relation to the syntax will be studied by the use of examples from the Serbian language. Poetic language is characterized by rich lexis and the use of localisms, dialectal vocabulary, archaisms, neologisms and borrowings as well as deviations of the use from the standard model of literary language through the formation of free combination and introduction of elements of speech not used in the adopted version of the standard language. The use and combination of a large number of stylistic expressions of poetic language give plasticity and expression to the poetic language but stylistic figures do not have a role of stylistic ornaments only but are also in the function of expressing the author's truth of man and the world around him. In the field of syntax, poetic language is recognized by form, length and structure of the sentence as well as their intonation and rhythmic particularities.
