Popis: The influence of trait anxiety on quality of life in women with breast cancer. In breast cancer, both conserving surgery (BCT) and ablative surgery (MRM) are possible. Previous studies showed a better overall Quality of Life (QoL) and body image (BI) for BCT patients. To establish the influence of surgical treatment and personality on QoL in breast cancer patients, a prospective longitudinal study was performed. Women with breast disease completed questionnaires before diagnosis and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment. No significant differences were found in QoL scores between patients with benign and malignant breast disease, and between the BCT and MRM group. However, correction for trait anxiety scores showed that high scores lead to significantly lower QoL scores, independently of diagnosis and surgical treatment. BI scores were not significantly better in the BCT group. In conclusion, trait anxiety seems an important factor of influence on QoL in breast cancer patients.
