The name "organic semiconductors" led the first workers to attempt to use these materials in the fields of radioelectronics in which inorganic semiconductors have found such wide application. The azine compounds (1-4, scheme 1), with aromatic and different heterocyclic sub- stituents, are photochromic and show both thermal and photochemical E-Z isomerization about the C=N double bond [5-8]. The photochromic properties of organic substances can be used to make dosimeters of ultraviolet radiation and screens protecting the eyes and optical devices from the action of powerful sources of light (for example, in nuclear explosions) [9]. As part of a continuing study in our laboratory, the present work was taken up to investigate the relationship between the electrical conductivity and chemical structure of some selected azine com- pounds (1-4, scheme 1). The samples under investigation (1-4, scheme 1) were prepared [10] using chemicals of Analar grade from BDH (UK). The reaction products were purified and recrystallized from ethyl alcohol as crystalline needles. They were checked by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and identified by elemental analysis. Infrared absorption spectra were recorded using a Perkin-Elmer 1430 spectrophotometer. The |
