Focusing on outcome expectations, many patients expect low effectiveness of psychotherapy, partially from previous negative experiences (Westra, Aviram, Barnes, & Angus, 2010). This is, in particular, problematic because negative outcome expectations can deteriorate treatment outcomes (Corsi & Colloca, 2017; Crow et al., 1999; Dew & Bickman, 2005; Greenberg et al., 2006). Therefore, therapists should modify possible negative outcome expectations of their patients. This research aims to investigate ways to influence and optimize expectation violation to modify negative outcome expectations in psychotherapy (VioLex-Model; Rief et al., 2015). In this study, we will experimentally violate negative outcome expectations. We will modulate the therapist’s interpersonal behavior, such as being warm or competent, during this expectation violation and investigating its influence on expectation change. |
