Popis: Categorizing, securing and developing natural resources and systems are presented here as tasks of landscape planning of direct relevance to the preservation and sustained economic utilization of the environment. Various objectives pursued in landscape planning, particularly those derived from coping with former East German practices of careless resource exploitation, display an interdisciplinary and “integrative” character and are thus seen to facilitate the consideration of settlement structures and economic activity in environmental planning. These objectives will be contrasted with the actual responsibilities presently defined by German planning legislation and how these effect the ability of landscape planning to pursue the goal of environmentally sensitive regional development. Following a critical discussion of environmental planning procedures, suggestions for model landscape planning approaches that flexibly address the land-use potentials of different ecological systems will be presented. Finally, research questions posed by new planning approaches with regard to ecosystems studies, interdisciplinary concepts and public policy will be addressed.
