Nutritional assessment tools, BMI & waist circumference are linked with respiratory illness & also signifies the importance of nutrition in such patients

Popis: Introduction: Malnutrition is a risk factor of various diseases including common respiratory diseases. We therfore aim to asses malnutrition in respiratory disorders. Methods: This was a prospective study conducted in department of Pulmonology in January 2016, Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. Patients diagnosed with COPD, Interstitial Lung Disease, and Asthma were included in this study. Patient9s Nutritional assessment was carried out by measuring Weight, BMI, and waist circumference, mid arm and mid calf circumference. The data was recorded in a research Performa and analyzed in SPSS v20 software. Results: There were n=52 patients. Males were n=34 and n=18 were females. Mean age was 54.35 years. Diagnosis of Asthma was n=14, COPD n=22 and ILD n=17. COPD was higher among men 21/34 and Asthma was higher among females 9/18 (p Conclusion: Nutritional assessment tools serve as important parameters for Nutritional status in patients with airway disorders. High BMI may have an association with asthma or could be due to steroids. BMI and waist circumference can be important in patients with COPD. Further studies are warranted in this aspect.
