Popis: This article provides an overview of the changes that have occurred in Uruguay since the beginning of the century and raise some questions about the expected consequences. The identification of factors that influence the evolution of farming in the long run offers the possibility of designing better strategies. It is proposed to review some recent research about farming styles in a region characterized by low dynamic in comparative terms. We identify some factors that have largely affected farm trajectories in the near past and conclude that it is necessary to improve the way we describe the operation of farms, taking into account, besides the traditional parameters, the ability to cope with an uncertain environment (biophysical, sociological, economic, ecological and political factors), seizing opportunities and avoiding difficulties. In the recent past, a typology identifying technical and economic logic was elaborated. Comparing a set of farms in terms of technical development, social and equity change in 15 years, we show that social factors have been crucial and they are expected to increase their importance further in the future. We suggest that specifying the consequences of various possible developments will help make better decisions.
