This chapter begins the process of analysing international student choice and why they become mobile. It focuses on the rational homo economicus of the international students who often present their mobility in terms of their long-term career goals. Areas discussed include the spoken language at the universities, issues of demand and supply within the higher education systems in their home countries, factors such as cost which may limit students’ opportunities for study and course-specific factors, particularly at master's and doctoral level, where students were seeking out very particular degree programmes and pathways or an individual to supervise their research. It suggests students feel a need to discuss the rational elements of their choice to legitimise their mobility. |
