Popis: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of acute moderate-intensity exercise on autobiographical episodic memory and semantic memory. A two-arm, parallel-group randomized controlled intervention was employed. The experimental group engaged in an acute bout of treadmill exercise for 15 minutes (70% of heart rate max), while the control group will engage in a seated activity. For episodic autobiographical memory, participants recalled as many personal memories of events from two periods in their life (childhood and adolescence). For general semantic memory, memory recall from two specific categories (animals and vegetables) were evaluated. For childhood-related episodic memory, the exercise (M=4.5, SD=1.6) and control (M=4.5, SD=1.3) groups had the same mean scores (P=0.99, d=0.01). Similarly, adolescent episodic memories were not different between groups (P=0.48, d=0.22). For semantic-based memories, those in the exercise group (vs. control) recalled more animals (21.8 vs. 19.8, P=0.22, d=0.39) and more vegetables (13.3 vs. 11.8, P=0.15, d=0.46). Acute exercise provided some suggestive evidence of increasing the recall of semantic memories (moderate effect size estimates), however, these results did not reach statistical significance.
