A description of equipment used in the study of sound propagation in the atmosphere near the Earth's surface is given. The effective flow resistivity of the ground was determined by a best fit of measured sound levels near the surface 50 m from a source to theoretical levels calculated by using partially coherent acoustics theory and empirical relations of Delany and Bazley [1]. This in turn permitted calculation of the theoretical sound levels at greater ranges for comparison with measured values. Results for a plowed field and a snow-covered field are presented. |
