Popis: The Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung (GSI), Darmstadt, is planning an extension of the existing heavy ion accelerator. The new facilities will contain two synchrotrons, four storage rings and approximately 1.4 km of beam transport, requiring different types of magnets and cooling regimes. As the magnets for the synchrotrons have to be fast‐ramped magnets, the cryogenic system heat loads will be dominated by the AC‐losses of the magnets. Our approach is to adopt and modify existing magnet designs to achieve a short development time for the facility. The cryogenic system has to provide 7.5 kW at 4.4 K in the two‐phase cooling regime, 3 kW at 0.4 MPa and 4.2 K in forced‐flow cooling for the synchrotrons. The storage ring magnets will be placed in bath cryostats and require a refrigeration capacity of 5 kW at 4.5 K. As the project will be commissioned in several steps, an economic plan for the cryogenic infrastructure is needed, which will be sufficient for every phase of the build‐up and allow experiments in some parts of the facilities as well as the testing of the components for the later parts of the facility.
