Climate change and the associated energy crisis are two of the largest drivers in the move to the production of clean, renewable energy which is the heart of current research in engineering and science. This paper investigates the possibility of siting wind turbines in urban areas and proposes an effective method for choosing suitable locations. In this analysis, we carried out a computational study of Vel Tech University campus, Avadi, Chennai, in order to identify an effective locations for wind turbines. The geometrical modeling of the campus was performed using CATIA software and pictures are imported from the standard Google Maps website. The computational domain used in this study is hexagonal and the building is placed in a circular sub-domain. The boundary condition for the flow is imposed on each of the three faces of the hexagonal domain dependent on wind direction. Meteorological data used in this study were obtained from the Chennai Meteorology Department. The 3D Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (3D RANS) simulations with the realizable k-e turbulence model were performed on a high-resolution computational grid as it is an effective viscous model pertaining to the problem statement. The computational results were used to identify and recommend suitable locations for wind turbines on the university campus. |
