This chapter Assesses the social climate of the prisons, defined in terms of inmate perceptions of several characteristics of the custodial staff, the treatment staff, and other inmates. These include perceptions about the power or influence of staff, their degree of understanding shown, and perceptions of coerciveness in relation to rules and regulations. These various perceptions produce the “normative order” of the prisons, and the chapter focuses on the relationships among these indicators using the institution as the unit of analysis. |
