As part of a risk assessment for remedial action at the Hyde Park landfill (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of 2,3,7,8-TCDD will be measured in the laboratory and in Lake Ontario fish. This three-year study is underway because it was decided that BAFs for TCDD used by agencies and found in the literature are substantially too low. The challenge of this study is to work with conditions representative of Lake Ontario waters which have TCDD concentrations below analytical detection limits. Despite such unmeasurable concentrations in water, TCDD has been found in Lake Ontario fish at concentrations as high as 160 ppt and in sediments at 15 ppt. Therefore, this study will focus on deriving a fish-to-sediment ratio to derive a modified version of the BAF. The results of this study will be used to finalize allowable loadings to the Niagara River and required remedies for the Hyde Park landfill, a site which contains approximately 1 ton of 2,3,7,8-TCDD. This study emphasizes the need for reliable estimates of environmental and food partitioning of chemicals in the risk assessment process. |
