The purpose of this review is to report on the recent developments concerning the rigorous derivation of thin film models for structures with the imposed nontrivial geometrical constraints. Examples of such structures include: growing leaves, specifically engineered polymer gels, and torn plastic sheets. The literature and results discussed in this review pertain to the study of non-Euclidean (incompatible) elastic energy functionals in the description of prestrained thin films, at their singular limits (Γ-limits) as h, the thickness of the film, approaches zero. |
